Cattle futures erased the triple digit losses at midday, as fat cattle futures ended 12 to 90 cents higher. With 8 trade days left, 9 deliveries against October contracts had been completed. OI in the October contracts was 3,966 as of Monday. Feeder cattle futures also recovered from midday losses and ended the session with $0.70 to $1.97 gains. The October 19 Feeder Cattle Index dropped $1.60 to $138.66. Tuesday cash cattle business reported by USDA was light mostly at $106. USDA noted a few NE sales from $103-$106, but not enough for a trend. The FCE online cattle auction has 1,096 head listed ahead of tomorrow’s scheduled sale. Wholesale boxed beef prices were mixed in USDA’s PM update, widening the Choice/Select spread to $18.93. Choice boxes were $210.60, up by 86 cents cwt. and Select boxes dropped another 17 cents to $191.67. USDA’s estimate for Tuesday’s cattle kill is 121,000 head. The WTD slaughter total is 239k, up 2,000 wk/wk and 3,000 head above the same week last year.
